Head trauma sustained during sport can lead to neurological conditions including post-concussion syndrome, CTE, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and motor neurone disease.

Symptoms can include memory problems, headaches, dizziness and confusion, tiredness, addiction to alcohol and drugs, issues with co-ordination and movement, difficulty controlling bladder or bowel movements, and personality changes and mood changes, such as aggression, depression and suicidal tendencies.

You can suffer a concussion even if you haven’t been knocked out cold, so it may be difficult to accurately count how many concussions you may have experienced during your sporting career.

Furthermore, the presence of a concussion is not necessarily required for head traumas to result in neurological problems. Repeated impacts to the head can lead to brain damage, even if the impacts seem minor at the time. Footballers who head the ball, and rugby players who tackle and carry (and ruck and maul in union) are accumulating high numbers of knocks to the head. Over the course of 10, 20, 30 years of playing, the number of head impacts can be considerable.
